Shawn Levy’s Star Wars Movie Taps Adam Project Writer Jonathan Tropper 5

Shawn Levy‘s Star Wars movie is picking up some momentum. Lucasfilm has hired screenwriter Jonathan Tropper to pen the script for the feature, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. The movie first came to light in November 2022, but has been on the backburner while Levy completed work on this month’s Deadpool & Wolverine.

Tropper is a frequent Levy collaborator, penning Levy’s 2014 family drama This Is Where I Leave You, and writing the Mark Raso-directed Netflix feature Kodachrome (2017), which Levy produced. The Adam Project was their biggest project to date, with the Ryan Reynolds starrer standing as Netflix’s No. 3 original film of all time. Perhaps appropriately, The Adam Project featured a weapon that resembled a lightsaber.

“If there was any doubt about my fanhood of Star Wars and all things a galaxy far, far away, I’ve eliminated that doubt,” Levy told The Hollywood Reporter at the time, though he added that the weapon was not technically a lightsaber due to rights issues.

Outside of his work with Levy, Tropper is known for creating the TV shows Banshee and Warrior, and serving as showrunner of the Jason Momoa series See.

Levy has a full plate, and it’s unclear if and when this movie would get off the ground. In addition to the final season of Stranger Things, which he produces and directs episodes of, his name has been mentioned in connection with Marvel Studios’ next Avengers movie, though it’s unknown if that will come to fruition.

Lucasfilm hasn’t had a Star Wars feature in theaters since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker and instead has built out its presence as a TV property on Disney+. Jon Favreau is directing the next Star Wars movie, Grogu & The Mandalorian, which moves his Mandalorian TV show characters to the big screen. It is due in theaters May 22, 2026.

Tropper is repped by CAA, Kaplan / Perrone Entertainment and Felker Toczek.
