New York City-based TikTok star Eva Evans was struggling with relationship problems before her apparent suicide at age 29 this week, her devastated family allegedly told police.
Evans, whose real name is Eva Baumgardner, had been depressed for several days leading up to her apparent suicide on Saturday, a friend who discovered her body told police,according to law enforcement sources.
The social media creator was found by the friend hanging by a scarf in her Brooklyn apartment as several cans of White Claw, a vial of white powder and an apparent suicide note were scattered nearby, the sources said.
The friend had apparently stopped by the home after not hearing from Evans for a day, according to sources.
The friend allegedly told cops she never thought Evans would commit suicide, the sources added.
Evans’ mother allegedly later told investigators that her daughter had previous bouts of of depression and was going through significant relationship problems at the time of her death, according to sources.
Evans commanded a large following on social media, where she made videos about fashion and the experience of being a 20-something woman living in New York City.
She also worked as an actress, starring in the Prime Video series “Club Rat.”
News of her death was met with outpourings of condolences, including from actress Julia Fox who called Evans a “New York icon.”
“I always saw her like a little sister and I knew she looked up to me,” Fox said. “She passed away. She was so young. Still had so much to do in life. But she lived life to the fullest.”
Evans own father died by suicide in 2018, an experience she wrote about in a letter for the mental illness awareness group Don’t Mind Me.
