POV: You’ve finished watching Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver on Netflix, and you’re reeling over that cliffhanger ending. Obviously the first thing you’re going to do is race to Google and search, “When is Rebel Moon Part 3 coming out?!”
Writer and director Zack Snyder has been vocal about his hopes to make Rebel Moon into a huge franchise, with grandiose plans for upwards of five movies and spin-off TV shows. Spoiler alert—stop reading now if you haven’t finished the second film—but the Rebel Moon Part 2 ending certainly sets up the story for future movies. Kora, played by Sofia Boutella, has just lost the love her life, Gunnar (Michiel Huisman) and revealed her true identity to her friends. She’s Arthelais, a former Imperium soldier and the assassin of the young Princess Issa.
But wait! According to Kora’s ally Titus (Djimon Hounsou), Princess Issa is still alive. Now Kora’s new mission is to find the princess and fight the evil Imperium. “To find her, and to fight.”
With that new directive setting up Rebel Moon Part 3, the movie ends. But will there be a Rebel Moon 3 movie? Read on to find out what we know.
Rebel Moon Part 3 release date:
There is no Rebel Moon Part 3 release date at this point because Rebel Moon Part 3 has not yet officially been green lit by Netflix. If the movie does get approved, you can expect to wait at least a year or more while the film is in production. Read on to find out what we know so far about whether there will be a third Rebel Moon movie.
Will there be a Rebel Moon 3?
Rebel Moon 3 has not yet been confirmed. Whether or not there is another Rebel Moon movie is up to Netflix, and will likely depend on how well the second movie performs on the platform.
Both Snyder and Boutella both remain hopeful that a third film will happen. When asked what she knew about Rebel Moon 3 in a recent interview with Decider, Boutella replied, “I don’t know. I’m not sure about that. But what I can tell you is that I love working with Zack, and I love my cast mates so much. I had an amazing experience on this film. So I’ll go back to it anytime.”
In a different interview with Playlist, Snyder said he’s been working on the script for Part Three, “We have definitely been working on a ‘Part Three,’ as far as the story goes,” he said. “We definitely know where we’re all headed – we’ve known that for quite a while, to be honest. So yeah, I’m excited to make some more Rebel Moon movies. That would be fun.”
Snyder also joked in an interview with Collider that if viewers want to help push Netflix to greenlight the next movie, they should give Rebel Moon Part Two a “double thumbs up” on the streaming service. “Probably just in general, a double thumbs up would probably do it.” In other words, Snyder and Boutella are ready to do the next movie, if Netflix gives them the go-ahead.
It’s not clear how well the saga has done for Netflix. Snyder recently claimed more people watched Rebel Moon than Barbie, but as The Wrap reported, his math is questionable at best. Netflix announced that the first Rebel Moon saw almost 24 million views in the first three days of its release, which is decent, but it is less than other hit Netflix originals like Leave World Behind (41.7 million views in its first three days) and Leo (34.6 million views). According to the trending title lists posted by Netflix on Tudum, the first Rebel Moon film was on the streamer’s Top 10 English-language films list for just four weeks, before it dropped off the list completely. It hasn’t made a reappearance since.
In other words, it might be a tough sell to get Netflix to pay for another Rebel Moon film. The streamer’s promotion for the sequel has been noticeably muted compared to the first film. But if The Scargiver is a big hit for Netflix, then you’ll probably get to see Rebel Moon Part 3. For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
