Francisco Alvarez exits game with thumb injury in Mets concern 5

One of the Mets’ budding stars exited early on in their series opener against the Dodgers in Los Angeles on Friday.

Francisco Alvarez left the game after an inning and a half after he appeared to tweak his thumb while running the bases in the top of the second.

The Mets catcher, during his turn up to bat against Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto, hit a little dribbler out in front of home plate before Los Angeles backstop Will Smith errantly flipped the ball over first baseman Freddie Freeman’s head and into right field.

Francisco Alvarez caught himself while falling to the ground.

Alvarez scored a run, but was removed before the Dodgers came up to bat.

Alvarez, going for an extra base, rounded first awkwardly and landed on his thumb.

He got back up and made it to second safely, but Alvarez then held his hand in visible pain as manager Carlos Mendoza and the Mets’ staff attended to him.

The young star remained in the game long enough to score a run on a Harrison Bader single, but before the bottom of the second started, he was replaced by backup Omar Narvaez.
