A new trailer for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice reveals the new misadventures in the afterlife for Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) and her daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega).
Like her mom, Astrid is a bit of an outcast. She has to deal with a gaggle of mean girls at her prep school. As they cackle at seeing Astrid’s reaction to a prank involving Halloween decorations, the teen offers a scathing retort: “When you’re all driving carpool and banging your pilates instructors to fill the empty voids in your life, we’ll see who gets the last laugh.”
She does make a new friend, however, played by Arthur Conti. Through him, she learns that Lydia is “a legend.”
Meanwhile, Lydia has to summon Beetlejuice herself in order to protect Astrid from the Neitherworld after the teen dared to summon the trickster. However, it appears that this time around, Beetlejuice is actually cooperating with her to battle an evil entity, Delores (Monica Bellucci) who appears to have a past with the ghost with the most himself.
“I need you to help me save my daughter but how do I know that you’re gonna keep your word?,” Lydia asks Beetlejuice. “I swear on my dead mother’s soul,” he responds before catching on fire. She also has the help of Rory (Justin Theroux), with the two of them together scouring the afterlife.
While Beetlejuice appears to have cleaned up his act ever-so-slightly, he still has plans to wed Astrid, who dons a gothic silver wedding dress. Beetlejuice is shown telling smartphone-carrying attendees, “Thank you all for coming to this special occasion, but right now we’d like to have a little privacy.” Their faces are then sucked into their devices. What’s a wedding night in the afterlife without a few frights?
Tim Burton helms the sequel with a script penned by Wednesday showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar; Seth Grahame-Smith is also credited for his contributions to the film’s story. The producers include Burton, Dede Gardner, Tommy Harper, Jeremy Kleiner and Marc Toberoff.
Fans of Burton’s 1988 classic will find out what new havoc is brewing in the Neitherworld when the sequel hits theaters on Sept. 6.
