Sony Pictures Classics has picked up Saoirse Ronan’s The Outrun addiction drama for a fall theatrical release.
Director Nora Fingscheidt’s film that stars Ronan as a young Scottish woman who repeatedly plumbs rock bottom before finally resolving to control her alcohol addiction amid Scotland’s Orkney Islands, will hit theaters on Oct. 4. Sony Pictures Classics will release the film in partnership with Stage 6 Films.
“The Outrun is a stunning movie, beautifully directed by Nora Fingscheidt with a career-best performance from Saoirse Ronan. It is a privilege to bring this accomplished and moving drama to audiences everywhere this fall,” Sony Pictures Classics said in a statement.
The drama also stars Paapa Essiedu, Stephen Dillane and Saskia Reeves and earlier had festival screenings at Sundance and Berlin. The Outrun is a BBC Film, Screen Scotland, and MBK Productions presentation and a Brock Media and Arcade Pictures production.
Based on the memoir by Amy Liptrot, who co-wrote the screenplay with Fingscheidt, the film is produced by Sarah Brocklehurst, Dominic Norris, Jack Lowden and Ronan. The project reunites Sony Pictures Classics with Ronan, who starred in the 2018 film adaption of The Seagull.
”The Outrun is a film that means the world to everyone involved and we are delighted to have found a home at Sony Pictures Classics as our North American partners. Their taste and experience are inspiring, and we are excited to embark on this journey together,” said filmmakers Fingscheidt, Brocklehurst, Norris, Lowden and Ronan in a statement.
The film had its world premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and will be released by StudioCanal in the U.K. and Ireland on Sep. 27.
