Rosario Dawson is lending her voice to Terminator Zero, the Terminator reboot that already has Timothy Olyphant, star of FX’s Justified, set to voice the killer Terminator robot.
Dawson (Ahsoka, Common Ground) has nabbed the role of Kokoro, an advanced artificial intelligence and Japan’s answer to Skynet. If brought online, Kokoro will be endowed with the same power as Skynet.
The Netflix anime series from The Batman II writer Mattson Tomlin is set to debut on Aug. 29, 2024, or “Judgement Day,” and will premiere opposite The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Amazon Prime Video.
Terminator Zero also has André Holland (Moonlight, The Knick) voicing the character of Malcolm Lee, a genius computer programmer and father of three haunted by prophetic nightmares of an apocalyptic future, while Sonoya Mizuno will voice the role of Eiko, a resistance fighter sent back in time to stop Malcolm from launching Kokoro.
Also added to the voice cast is Ann Dowd as The Prophet, a philosophical guide for the human resistance, helping shepherd survivors in the darkness of the unknown future ahead.
According to a synopsis from the producers, Terminator Zero will be set in 2022 where a future war has raged for decades between the few human survivors and an endless army of machines, and 1997 where the AI known as Skynet has gained self-awareness and has begun its war against humanity.
“Caught between the future and this past is a soldier sent back in time to change the fate of humanity. She arrives in 1997 to protect a scientist named Malcolm Lee who works to launch a new AI system designed to compete with Skynet’s impending attack on humanity. As Malcolm navigates the moral complexities of his creation, he is hunted by an unrelenting assassin from the future which forever alters the fate of his three children,” the synopsis continues.
The eight episode series hails from Japanese animation studio Production IG and is directed by Masashi Kudo. Terminator Zero promises new characters and is the first-ever iteration of the movie franchise to be animated.
Tomlin is the showrunner, writer and executive producer on the series, with David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger executive producing for Skydance. In 2023, Skydance Animation unveiled a multiyear pact with Netflix to develop and produce animated movies for the streamer.
