After making a name for himself with grounded action movies John Wick and Nobody, screenwriter Derek Kolstad is leaving Earth with Planet Death.

He teams with writer Robert Venditti and artist Tomás Giorello on the upcoming space invasion limited series, which publisher Bad Idea will release in early March.

The Hollywood Reporter has a first-look at the series, which takes place on a frozen, hostile planet millions of miles away from Earth as a human invading force attempts to take out a deadly weapon on an alien planet. It centers on Corporal Scott, whose battalion is wiped out within moments of landing on the planet, leaving him the sole survivor. According to the description, “Against overwhelming odds, Scott dares the unthinkable — cross behind enemy lines, survive the lethal landscape, evade capture by ruthless enemies, resist natural predators, face human deserters and finish the mission single-handedly. Locked in his suit of full combat battle armor, sustained only by what he can carry, and driven by Earth’s wrath, Scott must do by himself what an entire army could not. Destroy the weapon. Return home.”

Comic book readers can get their own first piece of the book at San Diego Comic-Con, where Bad Idea will host a panel at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 27 in room 24ABC, with attendees getting a convention exclusive to take home.

Kolstad is an in-demand screenwriter, who has Nobody 2 in the works is an an executive producer on the upcoming John Wick spinoff Ballerina. Said the writer in a statement, “Planet Death is my love letter to all of the comics and books I read, movies I watched, and games I played – late into the night with a grin on my face…from Hard Boiled and Ronin by Frank Miller to the films of Alistair MacLean like The Guns Of Navarone and Where Eagles Dare to Bradbury, Asimov, and Heinlein, to games like Starcraft and everything in between,” said Kolstad.

Bad Idea launched in 2020, with the company positioning its books as akin to prestige TV, touting its relationships with top-end creators.

“Derek, Rob, and Tomás have built an absolutely massive story of the highest caliber in Planet Death, and we’ve planned an equally massive promotional campaign to support it,” said Bad Idea CEO & CCO Dinesh Shamdasani.

Venditti, whose book The Surrogates was adapted into the 2009 Bruce Willis movie, noted, “I’ve written a lot of science fiction—but never from the perspective of a boots-on-the-ground, D-Day-style invasion. With every project, I want to push myself further. Planet Death is bigger in scale and scope than anything I’ve done before.”
