Showtime is expanding the Dexter universe with a new series, Dexter: Resurrection, that sees Michael C. Hall returning to the lead role as Dexter Morgan.

Hall will also narrate the inner voice of a young Dexter (played by Patrick Gibson) in the previously announced prequel series Dexter: Original Sin, which takes place in the ’90s. As for Dexter: Resurrection, a follow-up to 2021’s Dexter: New Blood, it’s set in the present day.

The news was revealed during a surprise appearance from Hall alongside Clyde Phillips, the executive producer and showrunner of both shows, at San Diego Comic-Con during the Dexter: Original Sin panel on Friday.

“We are thrilled to have the brilliant Michael C. Hall reprise his iconic role as Dexter Morgan in Showtime’s most successful series ever,” Chris McCarthy, Paramount Global co-CEO and president/CEO, Showtime & MTV Entertainment Studios, said in a statement. “While Dexter: Resurrection will appeal to the tens of millions of longtime fans, Dexter: Original Sin will introduce a whole new generation of viewers into this iconic series by starting from the beginning, which is sure to satisfy existing audiences as well.”

Dexter initially premiered in 2006 and went on to run for eight seasons with Hall in the titular role. After becoming a cult classic, Dexter: New Blood, a limited series set ten years after the conclusion of the original, premiered in 2021.

Dexter: Original Sin is set to premiere in December 2024, with Dexter: Resurrection launching in the summer of 2025. Until then, Dexter and Dexter: New Blood are currently streaming on Paramount+ with the Showtime plan.
